A Big Splash Towards Cleaner Waters: Baltimore's New Skimmer Boats

DGS News
Baltimore's New Skimmer Boats

Baltimore has crossed a new threshold in its commitment to keeping the waters of the Chesapeake Bay clean and safe for its residents, with the introduction of two new and improved Trash Skimmer boats. These boats have been in operation since 1989, marking a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to protect the harbor. The boats received in that year were the oldest assets managed by the Department of General Services (DGS), yet they continued to serve faithfully for over 30 years, adapting to new technologies as they emerged. Their longevity stands as a testament to the resilience of Baltimore's early investments in environmental sustainability.

Nick Hirsch, a longtime resident and DGS employee, fondly recalls, "I remember in my childhood walking around the Inner Harbor with my parents, waving at the boats as they went about their duties." His memories capture the deep connection Baltimoreans have with the health of the harbor. The addition of these modern boats, built by the original builders of the first fleet, Henning Clasen Boats (Dredge Boats, LLC), further enhances Baltimore's dedication to environmental stewardship.

Together with the trash wheel family, these innovative vessels have propelled Baltimore to the forefront of solutions aimed at preserving the Chesapeake Bay, ensuring that the harbor remains clean and safe for future generations.
